Baton Rouge was initially a European settlement discovered by the French explorer Sieur d’lberville. He led a party of explorers up the Mississippi and chanced upon this area which they called the ‘le baton rouge’ or a ‘red stick after a tree that they recognized in this area in the year 1699. Baton Rouge was governed by England, Spain, France, The Florida Republic, Spain, the Confederate States and finally the United States. Today Baton Rouge has emerged as major as a major petrochemical industrial area. This boom has ensured a considerable and consistent inflow of multi-million dollar projects into this area enhancing the quality of life here as well as fuelling the construction industry. Government bodies, however, are still the largest employment providers in this state.

Baton Rouge was considered the largest city of Louisiana until Hurricane Katrina> Now it continues to enjoy being the capital of Louisiana and holds the position of its second largest city. Post the Hurricane Katrina, Baton Rouge native residents are seen to be moving to the outlying parishes of Livingston Parish and Ascension Parish and it has been noted that this area is designated with one of the fasted declining population rates according to the US Census report of 2007-2008. Baton Rouge is also home to the Louisiana State University. The university was founded in 1853 and is the largest institute of higher education in the state. College sports form a very vital part of the Baton Rouge life. The most popular college teams of this area are the Southern University Jaguars and the LSU Tigers. Football is the biggest entertainment provider but other popular sports are basketball, baseball as well as gymnastics. Amongst the other college sports that make news in the area is the extremely successful rugby team that goes by the name of Baton Rouge Redfishes. Since its inception in 1977, this team has gone onto win several championships and regularly competes as a Division II team in the Deep South Rugby Union.

With 6 NCAA College World Series that LSU has won, their most recent win was in 2009 where they won against Texas. Their mascot is the Bengal Tiger called Mike the Tiger.
